Since much of the "weight" or "footprint" of a contemporary PC operating system is the window manager or GUI, perhaps start with a server install and then choose one from a great variety of front ends.
If you're a hard-core keyboarder - as yours here tends to be - you may like Fluxbox http://www.fluxbox.org It has great keyboard mappings where you can easily designate the functions keys for given tasks.
