Billmon has some info about special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald and his style. He thinks Rove should be afraid:
This is from my friend's memory, but given that he's got 20 years in the business, and I've known him longer than that, I trust his quotes:
"Fitzgerald is a prosecution machine," the old editor said. "When he wants somebody, he goes after them with whatever he's got. If he can't make the case he started with, he'll figure out what you did do and hit you with that. He's relentless, and he doesn't give a flying fuck about the press or the First Amendment. He'd throw us all in jail if it would help him make his case."
I'm reminded of the scene in The Terminator, where Reese -- the hero who's come back from the future to protect Sarah Connors -- tells her:
"Listen. Understand. That Terminator is out there. It can't be reasoned with, it can't be bargained with. It doesn't feel pity or remorse or fear. And it absolutely will not stop. Ever. Until you are dead."

Karl isn't as scared as everyone associated with this. Remember the carnage that Ken Starr left in his wake? Now you've got a wrecking-machine prosecutor with a real case, not just a blowjob. Those in the West Wing who are involved here are in deep trouble. If Fitzgerald is this aggressive, he's going to destroy the lives of WH staffers. He's going to bankrupt them. They're going to jail.
It will be interesting to see if the West Wingers are more afraid of Rove or Fitzgerald. My money is on Rove.

Bush knows that this term is his legacy, and right now he's stymied by none of his big programs going through Congress, being pressured by the conservative Christians who want their payback NOW, and his own popularity sliding downhill. He knows what he said before, and in his heart I believe he wants to say "I said I would fire anyone involved in this, and I did."
But in the real world, to fire Rove or not show support would mean becoming a lame duck President. Rove controls the big guns, and he knows it. Bush has to wait for Fitzgerald to indict Rove (and whomever else he can catch in his nets).
Right now, Bush needs to pray that Fitzgerald finds the dirt he needs before he has to focus on getting a Supreme Court justice nominated.
